Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged frequently and correctly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a forklift battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothes from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station must not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open fire are not allowed. Never allow objects such as matches or lighters to be used when an employee is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both toxic and explosive.
